How to use the resource database
This is version 1.0 of the tutorial dated September 10, 2009. Post suggestions for improvements to this tutorial here.
The area at the top provides dropdown boxes for First name, Last name, Company, City, State, Country, Category, Specialty, Delivery method, and Satisfaction guarantee. You may use any combination of the dropdowns to narrow your search. When you select a particular dropdown, the only options that appear are ones that are currently in the database. For instance, if you wanted to limit your search by a particular state in the United States of America, when you click on the dropdown for State you will see only the state that are tied to rows in the table, not all states in the United States.
Once you have submitted your search based on your selections, you are able to sort your results in the table that displays. The key point is that you can perform a multi-column sort by clicking on different column headers. The way you set the sort order is by clicking on either the left-hand side of the column heading (the area in which the column description resides) or the right-hand side of the column heading (the area to the right of the vertical bar inside the column). When you click in either area in the column, you have the option of sorting ascending or descending. The way to toggle between those two choices is to simply click in that area again. Let's look at an example of a multi-column sort you would like to execute. Assume that you have already narrowed the search to the "Book" Category of resource. You want to sort those results by Specialty, Number of ratings, and Rating: Overall. Scroll to the right to get to the Specialty column and click anywhere in the column heading. This completes the primary sort by specialty in ascending order. Next, scroll all the way to the right to the Number of ratings column. Click to the right of the vertical bar in the column header and your results will be sorted by number of ratings, in ascending order, within the specialty. You will notice the number 2 with an arrow pointing up in that column. But, you want the number of ratings to be sorted in descending order. So, place your cursor to the right of the vertical bar in the column header and click again. Move the cursor away and you will see that the information is now sorted in descending order of number of ratings (within each specialty) and there is a number 2 with an arrow pointing down. Finally, click the Rating:Overall column header to the right of the vertical bar twice to sort it in descending order. You will see the number 3 with a down arrow.
With your data sorted you are ready to start looking at more details for specific resources. Simply double-click on one of the rows to bring up a dialog box with Details, Ratings, and Comments tabs. When you are finished reviewing the information in the tabs, click the "X" in the upper right corner of the dialog box to close it.
